Sicilian Pizza is a thick crust or deep dish pizza, originated in Sicily, Italy.The main difference between Sicilian pizza and Italian pizza is in the crust. Italian or Italian-American pizza usually has a thin crust which can be either crispy or chewy. Sicilian pizza has a very thick crust. It’s more bread-like than Italian pizza. In Italian pizza, the emphasis is on the toppings such as sauce, cheese and pepperoni. With Sicilian pizza, the crust is king.

Italian pizza usually has a coating of sauce, cheese, vegetables, meats or other toppings. Sicilian pizza is often made without cheese using whatever is left over in the kitchen for toppings. The oldest type of Sicilian pizza is sfincione, which means “thick sponge.” It’s made with only herbs and olive oil.

Sicilian pizza, when it does use cheese, uses Sicilian-made cheeses like pecorino. Mozzarella is an Italian cheese. Modern Sicilian pizza chefs will use mozzarella, even in Sicily. Cheese can be baked into the dough or is placed directly on top of the dough before any spices, sauces or whatever.( information courtesy of Google)

I will write the original Sicilian pizza topping  and my own Pakistani version both…:)





Plain Flour3- 1/2 cups
Yeast1 sachet of instant yeast
Olive oil1 tbsp
Salt1 tsp
Sugar1 tsp


  • Mix all ingredients and knead with Luke warm water and cover with a cling sheet .
  • Leave it for 2-3 hours and then dust flour on working place and roll it.
  • Grease square or rectangle pizza pan with olive oil and place rolled dough.



Tomatoes8 chopped
Onion2 sliced
Saltto taste
Pepper1 tsp
Chicken bone less in cubes1/2 kg
Saltto taste
Pepper1 tsp
Red chilli flakes1 tsp
Oyster sauce 1 tbsp
Ginger garlic paste1/2 tsp
Yellow food colorpinch
Olive oil3 tbsp
Mozzarella cheeseas needed
Capsicum (if required)1 large


Original Sicilian pizza style

  • In a pan add olive oil and 2  onions in slices and cook till soft .Now add 8 tomatoes ,cut in small pieces. Add salt and pepper and cook till soft. Set aside.
  • In original Sicilian Pizza sauce goes on top, first spread Anchovies (small salt water fishes) on dough and then spread a generous amount of cheese on top.
  • True Sicilian pizza is topped with slices of cheese not shredded one.
  • Now spread tomato sauce on top and leave it for 20 minutes to rise.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes.

Sicilian Pizza Pakistani Style:

  • Make tomato sauce like mentioned in Original Sicilian pizza.
  • Marinate chicken with salt, pepper, ginger garlic paste ,red chili flakes, oyster sauce, pinch of yellow food color and oregano for 1-2 hours.
  • Cook in 1 tbsp oil and set aside.




  • On top of pizza dough spread cheese and then chicken mixture now sauce and then top it with cheese.
  • Sprinkle Mixed herbs and leave it for 20 minutes.
  • Bake it for 20 minutes at 180c.


Pizza is ready to serve…Enjoy.



These are the three points follow these to avoid smell of yeast after baking.

  • Give proper rising time to your dough.It should be double in size after rising.
  • Do not bake on high temperature otherwise bread will rise quickly, not give  yeast time to act properly. And might give a smell of yeast.
  • Give full time mentioned in recipe. If you will not give proper time and temperature ,yeast will give smell.

  1. Thanks for sharing such a yummmmmeee recipie.please tell the quantity of yeast. I have a big tin of pack of instant yeast means I tbs or more?
