  • Protection from Ultraviolet Radiation: Strawberry contains ellagic acid which, when applied topically protects the skin against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, which are primarily responsible for skin ageing.
  • Anti-ageing Properties: Vitamin C and other antioxidants present in strawberries prevent damage caused by free radicals to the skin and body. Free radicals occur during the process of transformation of food into energy. Free radicals accelerate the ageing process and vitamin C is effective in blocking the damage caused by free radicals.
  • Treatment of Acne: Vitamin C, Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs), salicylic acid and flavonoids in strawberries help in clearing acne and reducing oil.

  •  Effective Foot Scrub: Strawberries can be effective in giving you soft and crack free feet. Gond ka Tera is a magical gum having a number of benefits. In Punjab villagers use this on regular basis. I have learned this Halwa from my Maid. She belongs to a Village Shakardra, adjacent to Attock City. In winter season make this Gond Halwa for your family, specially aged persons can eat this for bones. Gond is use in Panjiri too which is a special treat of winter but for women after pregnancy this Gond ka tera is very helpful in gaining strength of the body and bones.

INGREDIENTS:

Semolina / whole wheat flour (chaki ka atta)1 cup
Desi ghee/ Un salted Butter1/2 cup or 3/4 cup
Cardamom3-4
Gond ka tera3-4 tbsp. (powder)
Milk1 cup
Sugar3/4 cup
Coconut 3 tbsp
Mixed nutsas required

METHOD:

  • Fry gond in ghee (2 tbsp.) It will pop and become crispy. Place on paper towel and let it cool. Grind it and set aside.
  • In ghee add semolina/ Atta and cardamom, fry till light golden color appear.
  • Now add all crushed nuts and sugar. Mix well.
  • Add gond powder and mix well.
  • Add Milk and stir.
  • Keep on mixing till ghee separates.
  • Add nuts and serve hot.
  • You can store in a air tight container  and keep in refrigerator.
  • Eat with a cup of tea and enjoy delicious aromatic halwa in winters.

SPA FOR FRESH SKIN

spa mI have seen a video on Facebook few days ago in which a girl was demonstrating, how to give a fresh look to your face. I found it very easy because all ingredients were at home, so I mixed all up and applied on my face. Believe me the final result after washing face was superb. You can use dried rose petals too, as I have dried rose petals and stored in a jar.

  • Multani Mati      1/2 tsp
  • Sandal powder   1/2 tsp
  • Haldi                    1/2 tsp
  • Rose petals          hand full, chop them
  • Milk                      to mix all ingredients.

Mix all ingredients and make a paste. Leave it for 15 minutes and than apply on your face. Leave it for few minutes and start rubbing with hand. Wash face with tap water and feel the difference 🙂

cherh halwa mThis recipe is a family recipe, my mother and mother in law taught me. I am passing it to you because one of my reader asked me to share a recipe with CHERH, Cherh is a gum resin (just like gond ka tera). It is used to nourish your bones, if you are suffering from back pain so use this regularly. I will recommend to use this in winter season. Cherh is maily used for prevention of rheumatic disorder, back pain, helping in general weakness.
This Halwa is super dooper nutritious and healthy with a lot of benefits.

INGREDIENTS:

Suji/ semolina1/2 cup
Sugara little less than 1/2 cup
Poppy seeds2 tbsp
Desi Ghee/ Buttera little less than 1/2 cup
Cherh1/2 tsp
Almondas needed

METHOD:

  • In 1 tbsp ghee fry cherh, it will pop and become double in size. Drain on paper towel and grind it finely.Set aside. Use 1/2 tsp in halwa and store rest in a jar.
  • Soak Suji in water.
  • In a heavy bottom pan add sugar and 1 tbsp water. Melt sugar.
  • Now add ghee and stir, add suji in it. Mix well.
  • Add poppy seeds/ kashkas and mix well. Cook till ghee separates.
  •  Now add Cherh in halwa and mix, add almonds.
  • Serve hot.

  • Store in air tight box and keep in refrigerator. Take 1 tbsp daily in winters, in summers take 1 tbsp after 2 days.
  • Continuous use will give you a good and lasting result.

A REMEDY FOR BONES PAIN

gond-mA common problem these days is pain in bones specially legs, My Aunt Farkhuda once told me this home remedy for my mother in law. I not only made this for my mother in law but also told this tip to a number of people who had bones pain and believe me they gave me very good response, so I am passing this tip to you people.
First let me explain about two gonds which we need for this medicine.

GOND KATIRA

Names in different languages:

  • English – Tragacanth gum
  • Hindi – Gond katira
  • German -Kutira Gummi
  • French – Gomme Adragante
  • Arabic – Katheera, Haloosiyaa
  • Bengali- Katila

Tragacanth gum or Gond katira comes from a shrub which is mostly found in Mid East, Iraq, and Iran and even in western Asia.Iran produces an enormous quantity of Gond Katira.

It is a tree gum just like any of myrrh but is less common in products than other gums, such as guar gum or gum Arabic. The advantages are pure and so worth noting. The only requirement is to keep patience while taking Ayurveda treatment as you will see remarkable changes with the passage of time.

GOND BABOOL/BABUL

Babul trees contain crude protein; up to 20% can be found in the leaves and up to 12% is found in the edible pods. The gum that the babul bark yields has multiple medicinal properties. The babul plant consists of compounds such as an active androstene steroid, D-pinitol, gallic acid, and rutin. Babul gum also contains Arabic acid in addition to calcium, magnesium, and potassium. The bark and leaves of babul tree contain tannin and galic acid, which gives it a bitter taste.

HOW TO USE GONDS:

  • Take equal quantity of both gonds.
  • Fry Gond katira in 1 tbsp desi ghee or butter.

  • Now take Gond Babool and fry in 1 tbsp ghee.

  • It will also pop. You need to stir continuously.

  • Let them cool and grind both.

  • Store in air tight jar.
  • Before sleeping dissolve in one cup of warm milk or water and drink it.
  • Use this in cold weather. I will not recommend to use in summer season.

qust-e-shiren-mWeather in our area is now changing to dry and cold. People get the flu in the winter time because influenza virus replicates and spread most effectively in this weather. My son was also effected due to change in weather, one of my friend (MRS HAMEEDA ALI) told me to do a home remedy instead of running to the doctors. She was the one who introduced me to this herb QUST. Everyone can use it to get rid of cold and flu.
The plant of Qust is also known as Costus. It is generally found in a marshy and wet places along the rivers at the eights up to 5000 ft.
These plants bears big serrated leaves but the roots are used for medical purpose. After collecting roots in the month of September and November, these are then cut into small pieces. This is a fragrant herb used as nutritive tonic.

This Herb is known as HERB OF PROPHET(P.B.U.H)

  • Hazrat Zaid Bin Arqam narrates- ” We were directed by Rasool Allah (saw) to treat pleurisy with Qust Bahri and Roghan-e-Zaitoon” (Tirmizi, Sanad-e-Ahmed, Ibn Maja)
  • Hazrat Anas Bin Malik narrates that Rasool Allah (saw) stated ” Out of those things which are being used by you for treatment, the cupping and Qust Bahri are the best treatment.”
    Hazrat Jabir Bin Abdullah narrates that Rasool Allah (saw) stated “Don’t burn the glottis of your children, when you are having waras and quest-e-Hindi, make them lick these.”
  • “When Nabi-e-Akram (saw) entered the house of Hazrat Aisha (R), she was having a child bleeding through mouth and nose. Prophet (saw) asked, what was that? She answered, “the child has Azraa. Prophet (saw) said, “Alas ! ladies, that you used to kill your children like that. If in future any child got affected with Azra in his glottis or he felt headache, then ground the Qust-e-Hindi/ Shiren and make him lick it. Therefore, Hazrat Aisha carried out his instructions and the child became healthy.” (Muslim)

 

Qust (Costus) is of two types:

  • Qust e Hindi (Indian) – which is black
  • Qust e Shiren or  Bahri which is white or yellowish.  Qust e Hindi is hot and dry than al Bahri.

Qust is usually used on its own or partnered with water, honey or olive oil. My friend told me to mix it with honey and give it daily to your kids. It is best for nasal congestion.

According to Ibn Al Qayyim’s work ‘At Tibb an Nabawwi’, the ointment is made by mixing Qust al Hindi powder in equal parts with good quality raw honey and add a very small amount of clean water. The paste should not be runny so that it runs off the skin but should stick to the area where it is applied. I would personally advise to apply to the area once per day for 30 minutes, then wash it off. This is for scar free face, for fading freckles and for clear skin.

Qust should be mixed in Olive oil as it was none other than Rasool’Allah (sallAllahu alayhi wassallam) himself who instructed His Ummah to use olive oil for eating and for massage. Qust infused olive oil should be massaged on the points of pain/joints in the evening before bed.

Qust also helps strengthen the liver and improve digestion.

Its easily available In herbal shops. You can ask them to make powder of root pieces.

aloevera-mThis is a very effective home remedy for spotless and glowing skin. Aloe Vera is very useful for our skin and health. This treatment will cleanse, scrub, tone and nourish your skin. Aloe vera is rich in Vitamin C and beta carotene which gives your face and skin nourishing and anti ageing qualities. It can nourish your skin without making it greasy.

Aloe Vera helps to heal your skin with sun damage and it acts as a protective layer on the skin and helps to re nourish your skin. Because of its nutritional qualities and antioxidant properties, the skin heals quickly.
Take Aloe Vera leaf. I have this plant in my garden. You can grow plant in container and get fresh gel whenever you need. Now follow these steps for skin treatment.

  • Cut leaf into four parts. Cut sides of leaf, it contain small spikes. Cut from center. You can use store brought gel as well.
  • Now you have 4 pieces, one is for cleansing, second is for scrubbing, third is for toning and fourth is for moisturizing.
  • Sprinkle rice flour or granulated sugar on one piece. This is for scrubbing.
  • Extract gel from one piece and transfer it in a small bowl. Mix  add 2tsp rose water in it, 2 tsp mineral water or use normal boiled water. Mix all well and fill in a spray bottle. You can store it in refrigerator for 6-7 days but shake well before use.
  • Wash and towel dry your face. Rub one piece on your face. This is cleansing. Rub in circular motion. This natural moisturizer will nourish and hydrate your skin and enhance elasticity.
  • Wipe your face with a wet tissue or wet cotton ball.
  • Now take piece which you have prepared for scrubbing. Scrub this piece on your face for 1-2 minutes in circular motion. Aloe Vera is effective for Acne and scars as well.
  • Wash your face and towel dry it.
  • Apply toner on your face and let it dry.
  • Now apply fourth piece on face. And let it dry completely and wash your face.
  • Do cleansing, toning and moisturizing daily , 10-15 days But do scrub twice weekly.
  • You will feel difference in a week. Your skin will start glowing.

  • Move on to your arms. The process is very similar. You’re moving towards your heart with each stroke. Stroke from your hand towards shoulders. Stoke rough areas like elbows more time. Move on to back, stroke from buttocks to the shoulders.
  • Now move on to torsos and sides, from your hips to armpits.
  • Move on to more sensitive areas of the skin with softer bristled brush. Dry brush your face from forehead to neck. If you want to dry brush your body one more time then use softer brush to avoid irritation.

  • Take shower after dry brushing. Dead skin can be washed off in shower.
  • Do not rub your skin with towel after shower. Just pat dry it.
  • Apply a natural oil on your whole body, for example coconut oil.
  • Wash your brush with soap in a week and dry it in a sun spot.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE

  • Never skin brush over inflamed skin e.g. open wounds, inflamed sores, varicose veins, sunburn skin.
  • Never skin brush during an active cancer state.
  • Avoid breasts & genitalia area.
  • If pregnant seek doctor’s advice first before skin brushing.
  • Wash brush before use.
  • If an allergic reaction appears stop brushing.
  • A slight reddening of the skin (erythema) is normal, it is the blood circulation responding to the skin brushing.
  • It is recommended not to brush on freshly shaved legs. If you are going to a spa to get body brushing either hold off from shaving your legs before the appointment or shave the day before.

1. TONGUE PRESS

Sitting with your back straight and shoulders down, tilt your head back so that you are looking at the ceiling. Forcefully press your tongue flat to the roof of your mouth. Then, keeping your tongue against the roof of your mouth, lower your chin to your chest as far as possible without rounding your upper back. You should feel your chin and the front of your neck contract. Then relax your tongue and straighten your neck to return to the starting position.

That’s one rep. Complete two sets of 20 reps each.

2. POUT AND TILT

From a sitting or standing position, stick out your lower lip as far as you can to form a pout (place a finger on your chin; the skin should feel wrinkly and puckered). Hold this contraction for one second. Then, with your lip still out, contract the muscles at the front of your neck to lower your chin to your chest as far as possible without rounding your upper back. Pause and hold for another second, then relax your lips and straighten your neck to return to the starting position.

That’s one rep. Complete two sets of 20 reps each.

3. THE O

Sitting with your back straight and shoulders down, tilt your head back so that you are looking at the ceiling. Close your lips so they are together but relaxed. Keeping your lips closed, open your mouth so it forms an “O” shape. Hold this position for 20 seconds. You should feel a contraction on both sides of your neck directly under your jaw line. 4. KISS THE CEILING

Standing tall with your arms hanging at your sides, tilt your head back so that you are looking at the ceiling. Then try to kiss the ceiling by puckering your lips and extending them as far away from your face as possible. You should feel a tightening throughout your neck and chin. Hold for five seconds, then relax your lips and lower your chin to return to the starting position.

That’s one rep. Complete two sets of 15 reps each.

5. CHIN ROTATION

In a seated or standing position, elongate your spine for a tall, straight back. Then, leading with your chin, slowly and gently rotate your head so it moves in a full circle from your shoulder to chest to shoulder to back. (If full circular rotations bother your neck, stick with semicircles moving from shoulder to shoulder.) Make sure to keep your shoulders down and back throughout the movement.

That’s one rep. Complete 10. Repeat in the opposite direction.

6. SIDE NECK STRETCH

Sitting on the floor, place one hand on the floor, fingers down, about one foot away from your hip. Do not lean or rest heavily on your fingertips. Wrap your opposite arm over the top of your head so that your palm rests on your opposite ear. Keeping your head in alignment with your neck, bend your head toward your shoulder, using your palm to gently press down your head to your shoulder. Then take your fingertips off the floor and place them on your upper arm, applying gentle pressure to press the shoulder down and away from your head. Hold this position for 10 seconds. Release your hands, return to the starting position and repeat on the opposite side.

That’s one rep. Complete three.

7. JAW RELEASE

In a seated or standing position, elongate your spine for a tall, straight back. Moving your jaws up and down like you are chewing and keeping your lips together, inhale deeply through your nose then slowly exhale while humming. When you finish the exhale, open your mouth as wide as possible with the tip of your tongue gently pressed against the back of your bottom teeth. Holding this position, inhale then exhale with an audible “ahhh” sound.

The entire move should take 90 seconds. That’s one rep. Complete two.

8. PIGEON

Place your thumb on one side of your jaw, underneath your jawbone and just before it turns upward toward the ear. Place the same hand’s index finger in the same location on the opposite jaw. While holding your hand still, push forward against your hand with your neck and head. Hold this position for 30 seconds, then release your hand and move your neck back to the starting position.

That’s one rep. Complete three.

9. STICK OUT TONGUE

This is a great exercise that builds the muscles in your chin and can reduce a double chin without surgery. Stand or sit in a relaxed position. Open your mouth as wide as you can and stick your tongue out as far as you can so that you feel your chin and neck tighten. Hold your tongue out and count to 10.

Relax and return to the starting position. That’s one rep.  Complete 10.

10. HEAD LIFT

Lie face-up on your bed with your neck on the edge of the bed and let your head hang relaxed off of the side. Contracting the muscles at the front of your neck, slowly lift and curl your head toward your chest as far as you can while keeping your shoulders flat on the bed. Hold for 10 seconds, then, being careful not to let your head drop, slowly relax your neck to return your head to the starting position. That’s one rep. Complete three sets of two reps each, sitting up between sets to prevent dizziness. If you experience dizziness, take sitting breaks between each rep or perform the exercise on the floor with your neck in a straight line for starting position.

PERSIMMON / JAPANI PHAL


Persimmon is known by many names including, Sharon fruit, Japani Phal or fruit in Urdu, and is Diospyros kaki in Latin.
